Abstract
In Miahuatec, a Zapotec language of the southern branch, direct reports are introduced by the dicendi verbs -ab, -ez, and -ne. These dicendi verbs differ in their semantics in that the pair of verbs -ab and -ne lexically encode the source of information, with the verb -ab introducing reports obtained directly and the verb -ne introducing reports obtained indirectly. Meanwhile, the verb -ez is used in reporting disputes, allegations, and discord, and when reporting the voice of anthropomorphized animals in certain stories. On the other hand, the three dicendi verbs exhibit a high degree of distributional promiscuity. They can occur on the left margin, on the right margin, or on both margins of the direct report. It is possible to explain the distributional promiscuity of these verbs through a process of pragmatization revealed by the loss of typical morphosyntactic properties of Zapotec languages, such as the obligatoriness of subject expression. Finally, Miahuatec follows the trend noted by Aznar and Seifart (2025), who claim that the order of the introducer and direct report manifests a correlation with the basic constituent order (Greenberg, 1966; Lehmann, 1973; Vennemann, 1984, among others).
