Abstract
This study analyzes how Peruvian cumbia, as an expression of popular culture, conceptualizes romantic relationships through metaphors, metonymies, and image schemas, from the perspective of Cognitive Linguistics. Based on a corpus of fifteen lyrics selected for their popularity, the research identified metaphors such as LOVE IS A DISEASE, LOVE IS FIRE, LOVE IS A TRAP, and LOVE IS A TRANSACTION, which project emotional experiences in concrete and bodily terms. Likewise, metonymies such as HEART FOR FEELINGS or HEART FOR THE BELOVED PERSON were found, condensing affective notions into culturally rooted images. These processes rely on image schemas such as container-content, path, force dynamics, and growth cycle, which structure abstract emotions like desire, betrayal, or heartbreak into tangible forms. The study concludes that Peruvian cumbia configures a vision of love marked by intensity, conflict, and vulnerability, where metaphor and metonymy act as central cognitive mechanisms for representing and communicating affective experience.
