Issue 14 of Semas brings together five articles and a book review spanning several areas of theoretical and applied linguistics. It describes the morphosyntax and prosody of direct reported speech in Miahuatec Zapotec, and offers a diachronic analysis of the semantic behavior of the imperfective past in general Mexican Spanish. From a cognitive linguistics perspective, it examines the metaphors, metonymies, and image schemas through which Peruvian cumbia represents romantic relationships; appraisal theory frames a study of affect and graduation in personal narratives; and critical discourse analysis is used to explore the image of China constructed by the Chilean press during the COVID-19 pandemic. The issue closes with a review of the Bibliografía de la lingüística misionera española (BILME). Taken together, these works reflect the diversity of approaches with which contemporary linguistics addresses the relationship between language, discourse, and society.
