Issue 13 of Semas features the Dossier from the IX Congreso Nacional “Discurso y política: presente y futuro de México y América Latina.” These texts examine the intersection of language, education, and power from various disciplines within applied linguistics. They address crucial topics such as the evaluative discourse of teacher educators, the ideological load of metaphors in press coverage of migration, and the importance of prior knowledge in the classroom. In addition, the issue includes two further works exploring the semantics of the future tense in Spanish and the pragmatic shortcomings of television subtitling for deaf viewers. Taken together, the contributions offer a view of communication as a tool for pedagogical regulation and identity construction.
